so i've made a few batches and i know i clean out my carboy but there is still a funky smell that is always there. is that normal?

You are preobally using a better bottle carboy. They tend to hold a little of the smell. It should smell a little like your wort if it smells bad you might have mold in it. Make sure to clean it out really well. Oxy clean works the best, just let it soak. Rinse out well and air dry
